TIME TO END THIS AGE-LONG DECEPTION

TIME TO END THIS AGE-LONG DECEPTION

It is no longer news that fuel queues have disappeared from our filling stations. Nigerians can smile on their way back from the office, confident that they would relax with a serving of chilled beverages the moment they got home. The big question, however, is why did it take so long for light to appear at the end of the tunnel. Then. yet more intriguing is the bigger question: why are some entrenched and minority interests so bent on quenching this God sent light before we begin to fully reap the benefits that come with it?

I will attempt to answer these two important questions in line with our quest at Democratic Legacy Initiative to employ the instrumentality of information to rip off the veil that has hitherto been used to subject Nigerians to perpetual servitude.

Let us travel back in time to the period between 1986 till just recently. The process of decay began just about then. At a point when all our refineries had collapsed, ninety percent of the domestic fuel consumption came from refineries outside the shores of Nigeria, owned fully by few  retired generals. One didn’t need to look too far for reasons why it was  convenient and more profitable to keep the refineries in a permanent comatose state. The longer the flow of imported fuel is sustained, the wealthier members of the cabal became and the more hopeless the fate of the refineries became.

When it appeared the statuesque could no longer be maintained due to agitations from civil rights groups, they bandied what in all ramifications was a dumb solution aimed at entrenching their positions even further. The panacea they proffered was for the refineries to be privatized, which in order words implied that they should be sold to the highest bidder. Who else, if I may ask, would have been able to bid higher than the past military leaders who served before handing over in 1999 – proud owners of billions of dollars stashed away in foreign banks. Let us pause and picture the scenario where their proposal had sailed through. They would have ended up owning the contraption called Nigeria, nail, hook and sinker, given the fact that they could then regulate the operations of the refineries at home which at this point they must have acquired, so as to create a viable market for the fuel imported directly from their refineries abroad.

The power sector of our economy was yet another trophy that needed to be subdued and put under close supervision so as to complete the circle of subjugation. Apart from the trucks and cars plying the roads, the second biggest guzzler of fuel and diesel are generators. If for instance a system which guarantees uninterrupted supply of electricity is put in place, Nigerians will invariably have no need to buy generators. It then follows that given a generator- free economy, the consumption of petroleum products would be drastically cut down by almost forty percent. There is no gainsaying that such a situation will no doubt bring little joy to the hearts of the generals who own refineries in Europe and Asia. So, what to do? Very simple. In the short term, strategically ensure that power supply remained permanently epileptic by sabotaging all efforts to revamp the sector. With the right kind of money and contacts, it required little effort to achieve this. All that needed to be done was to, in an ambush formation, infiltrate the ranks of the electricity workers union and the damage was as good as done. Or, then, how else can one explain why in spite of all the billions of Naira squandered by past regimes in the bid to get past the standard 3000 megawatts of electricity, which had remained the benchmark for decades, nothing was achieved. You will recall that in the case of the telecommunication sector, the indicator refused to go past the seven thousand lines mark until God intervened in His infinite mercy.

Still talking about strategies adopted by the cabal to ensure that the boat of profiteering and exploitation is not rocked, the long term approach had remained to ensure that a loyal and trusted member of the fraternity always emerged as president of Nigeria. They could not suffer the presence of a reformer who might harbour the slightest intention of getting the infrastructures back on their feet. This explains the pattern that had characterized the emergence of our past presidents. Which of them could boast of becoming president by popular ballot? None. It was always a case of few generals coming together to hand pick either one of their own or someone they were convinced was too weak to rock the boat.

A level thinking reader would have at this point worked out by inference why this same mendacious cabals are not comfortable with the choice of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as substantive president for the next four years. Given the magic he has wrought just in a matter of months, they must have reasoned, little is left to imagination as to what he could end up changing in four years. By such reasoning, he is obviously a bad choice, considering their scale of preferences and in which direction their personal interests lie.

In their line of thought, if within months he was able to get all our refineries back to work, and, like magic improved supply of electricity significantly enough for Nigerians to openly acknowledge and appreciate, then in four years, if he is left to continue, he would have done enough to put them permanently out of business. In order to avoid such a calamitous turn of events, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan must be stopped at all cost. Come to think of it, they had no hand in his emergence as president and that in the Nigerian tradition amounts to a capital offense. How could he be there without their approval? That is unthinkable! They had to find a way to stop him and zoning was the trump card that first came to mind. From all indications, however, that failed to achieve the expected result because rather than deter him, he is becoming more popular by the day. The reason is not far fetched. My Bible told me that God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers. Job 8.20

We want to use this opportunity to call on all Nigerians to join forces with the Democratic Legacy Initiative to work out our salvation using our collective will-power. We can make up our minds today that we have had enough of this age long deception. We can declare an end to this circle of subjugation and servitude. We can no longer afford to stand in the midst of plenty and die of starvation. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan must be allowed to accomplish the task God sent him to do.

BEWARE: HISTORY MUST NOT REPEAT ITSELF

BEWARE: HISTORY MUST NOT REPEAT ITSELF
(Let us say no to the apostles of zoning)

Once again evil men are on the loose. They would stop at nothing to blot the face of positive change, especially when it will not put filthy lucre into private coffers. How long shall we thrive in ignorance, always letting those who trample on our common good enjoy a field day. They threaten that it is either zoning or nothing. Their arguments are down right stupid and without substance. Rather than come up with concrete dividends that Nigerians stand to benefit if their formula is adopted, they are busy ranting about agreements made in the dark past. Agreements that baffle logic and leave the electorate with nothing but poverty.

The most annoying aspect is the threats coming from their camp on daily basis. They threaten hell, brimstone and chaos if their selfish zoning agenda is not adhered to. The question is, what mark did the past presidents, forced upon our common psyche by the zoning arrangement, leave on the sands of history. Nothing but misery, wholesome deprivation and stunted development. It is sheer madness when a man does something exactly the same way it was done in the past and expects a different result. Our only response here is that it can no longer be business as usual. We are not going to live and allow history repeat itself.

Let us look back at history for it is the mirror through which we recognize the pattern of their subterfuges. It is a pattern that truncates and attempts to kill any ray of hope that ever came our way.

Murtala Muhammed was God sent to heal the wounds of the civil war. He came to rebuild the ruins of the carnage occasioned by the war. He did not however contend with those who feed fat on the ruins of war and chaos. Before he could make any difference he was cut short in mid trajectory and we mourned the death of a good man.

The towering image of Brigadier Tunde Idiagbo is still sharp in our memory. He was bent on sanitizing our society and making things work. But that was not to be because those that will not suffer change to thrive amongst us made sure he did not live to reflect on his positive deeds.

The pillar of sports in Africa and philanthropist extraordinary Alhaji Moshood Abiola is another case in point, he was a great man loved by all. He won a landslide victory upheld by even men from foreign lands. His victory was not only cancelled but he was annihilated like others before him that meant good for Nigeria.

Now, once again, we have a man that shares the same pedigree as the other greats cited earlier in the preceding paragraphs. His name is Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan. Have we ever stopped to ponder at the circumstances that brought him where he is today. We at Democratic Legacy Initiative see clearly the hands of deity at work in the life of a man. A man that divine destiny has brought our way like those others that came in the past like Meteors.

The difference is that unlike them, we will not allow this choosen one to fizzle out the same way others did. We can not keep quiet and let evil triumph over good as it did in the past. For once, let us stand up to be counted on the side of positive change.

HYPOCRISY IN HIGH PLACES

HYPOCRISY IN HIGH PLACES

Hypocrisy simply put means to say one thing and do a different thing. The prominent apostles of zoning from the north, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and former president Ibrahim Babangida are typical embodiments of this inglorious term. Let us take a look at their antecedents.

Nigerians are yet to lose sight of the vaulting ambition of Atiku Abubakar which he has had cause to exhibit on several occasions. One case in point was in 2003 when he sought to depose his erstwhile boss Obasanjo during the PDP primaries. He had almost succeeded before the cards crumbled at the last minute. Zoning meant nothing to him at that point. He conveniently forgot that in the spirit of the zoning formular, the south west was expected to occupy the saddle till 2007.

Babangida on the other hand appears to be deluding himself with the impression that he has a magic wand, with which he could make his terrible past disappear. He spelt bad luck wherever he went as a military dictator. He was infact a kill joy. Was he not the one that terminated the positive regime of Buhari and Idiagbon, and in exchange he left us with the ignominious misrule of the Abacha Junta which crippled our economy. It was during his watch that the bomb blast phenomenon debuted in Nigeria, and ever since then the system of attempting to blast away anything that stands in the path to power appears to have stuck with Nigerians.

The poser for Atiku Abubakar and Ibrahim Babangida is, should they by any chance find themselves in Dr Goodluck Jonathan’s shoes, would they willingly vacate the presidential seat in deference to the destructive contraption called zoning.

It is glaringly evident, that there are stars, men and women of integrity and credibility, leaders with great vision from the north. We ask that these leaders should speak up and silence the over zealous political puppets who claim to be representing the north with nothing to show but a legacy of impoverishment.

Some of these people are not true representatives of the north but representatives of their pockets, as past and current events have shown. By their fruits thou shall know them Jesus said. A great northern scholar once said, “Conscience is an open wound only truth can heal it.”
We still have great men; if not greater men than this great scholar in the north today, please let them speak, for  we are tired of the activities of these ADULTERATED AND COUNTERFEIT politicians claiming to be representative of our great northern brothers.
We at Democratic Legacy Initiative are convinced that instead of dissipating energy listening to political jobbers  without agenda, we would rather present to Nigerians the perfect alternative and let them see strong reasons why he must run for office. That alternative is Dr Goodluck Jonathan and below are our arguments

1.       President Goodluck Jonathan is God’s intervention in the affairs of this country and even if we try, we could find ourselves failing in an attempt to scuttle the arrangements already put in place by divine powers. Anyone that is harboring doubts should take a second look at the nature of his ascension. It could only have been the hands of God that would promote a man so effortlessly.

2.       His election as the substantive president of our country is what we need at this point to quell the disquiet in the Niger Delta region permanently. Come to think of it, is it not only proper that a region that had been schemed out of governance in all the fifty years of our nationhood, be allowed to have  a taste of the pudding for at least the next four years if that will guarantee peace in our country.

3.       If what we have witnessed in the short period President Goodluck Jonathan had been in the saddle is anything to go by, then we can boldly say, let us have more of him in the coming years. Outside the shores of this country, our image has taken a dramatic turn for good. The pariah status that had shadowed our existence all these years is now over, thanks to the diplomatic ingenuity of our God- sent President. World leaders find themselves falling in love with him. Everywhere he has been to in the course of his diplomatic shuttle, the reception had been overwhelming. Do we want so desperately to squander this enormous goodwill garnered under so short a time on the alter of zoning. Changes are equally evident in other sectors of our economy. Power has improved tremendously and our banks are healthier. So, what other indices do we need to recognize greatness in a leader.

4.       It is high time we told ourselves the truth in this country. Those that challenge the validity of President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid to contest in the 2011 presidential elections are simply stocking the fire of discord. The only way we can redress the injustice meted on Niger Deltans is to allow one of their own have a go at the presidency for once. After all, they have over the years been denied the use of their farmland so that Nigeria can feed her teeming population with the resultant oil wealth. Adopting Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 as our president would be a profound way of saying thank you to the Deltans for blessing this nation with their oil wealth and also a way of compensating them for the neglect they have suffered under successive governments.
